Mt. Juliet Music School Switches Gears From Teaching Rock To Shaving Ice

Mt. Juliet, TN. April 16, 2021- As the pandemic swept the world last year, small businesses everywhere tried their best to adapt and see it through. Some mom and pop shops have been slowly recovering while others permanently shut their doors. One local area music school, which opened in April 2014 took the initiative to keep running the show by shaving ice. Since its inception, Rock Zone has been actively growing its after school program and summer camps but that all came to a halt when the area was savaged by the tornado and late school shut down due to the pandemic. Like most businesses, Rock Zone was able to adjust to support virtual learning and provide support to its dwindling roster of students.

“We wanted to make sure none of our staff members or students got sick. So we were ok with the numbers decreasing if it meant that everyone would be safe. At one point it was just me and two kids hanging out the whole day in our 6,000 sq ft facility that used to host over 60 kids daily.” explains Johnny, “I knew we had to add another source of revenue that would allow the public to support us but that could also be quick, fun and available for take out”

In July 2020, Juarez converted the school’s kitchen into a dessert shop with a tropical theme. Drawing inspiration from his Costa Rican heritage and his travels to Hawaii and other tropical islands. At that point Tico Ice is born. Tico is an idiomatic term used for a native of Costa Rica. The logo is a red Scarlet Macaw, which is abundant in the Costa Rican rainforest and according to Johnny, his spirit animal.

Tico Ice likes to point out that they serve freshly shaved ice Snoballs which are fluffy like snow, different that the crushed ice that most people have had at the fair. Additionally Tico Ice also serves Blue Bell Ice Cream, Bubble Tea, Italian Ice, Mangonadas and custom sodas like “The Galaxy”. Mom can get a Boba drink while little sister can get a Tiger’s Blood (Strawberry/Coconut) Snoball. They offer free toppings; like gummies, cream, or whip. Additionally they offer free refills on the Snoballs for dine-in clients and free Pup Cups daily. The shoppe has an indoor play area plus seating both indoor and outdoor.

Seven years later Rock Zone is celebrating with their Big Party happening on Saturday, April 17th from 12pm-9pm 11914 Lebanon Rd. Mt. Juliet. Besides having live music, rides, and prizes; Tico Ice is hosting a Disney Giveaway. Each purchase gives the customer two entries to win 4 Day passes to the happiest place on Earth. Follow at

Rock Zone School Of Music founded by Vanessa and Johnny Juarez, has helped hundreds of families with not only music lessons but also summer camps and after school programs. Based out of Bob Jones’ Midway Plaza, the couple tried to figure out their next steps when area schools closed due to the tornado that tore through the city and then school closures due to the pandemic.
